Cheap and cheerful are two of the words we associate with Franco Manca, but they’re by no means the only things this Chiswick pizza place has to offer. The simple menu – comprising six pizzas in total – includes three veggie options: number one (tomato, garlic and oregano), number two (tomato, mozzarella and basil) and number three (courgettes, basil, mozzarella, ricotta and pecorino). All have a home-made sourdough base, cooked to perfection in the enormous on-site brick oven.
We went for number two (pictured). Margherita pizzas can be dull, but the Franco Manca version is made with a rich tomato sauce and tangy fresh mozzarella. Pizza Express this is not. Our non-veggie dining companion had the number six (featuring cured chorizo), which she assured us was equally delicious. Special mention also goes to the enormous fresh green olives we picked on to start and the organic white wine. And the best part? Our bill came in at only just over £10 per person.
Franco Manca is rapidly expanding, with restaurants in Tottenham Court Road, Balham, Broadway Market and Westfield Stratford, as well as the original branch in Brixton Market. The Chiswick restaurant has a relaxed family feel, with some outside seating. We don’t usually review chains, but when pizza’s this good we find it hard to keep it to ourselves!
Opening hours: Monday to Sunday 12-11PM
